Homeward Bound

This is being lost and just living everyday to get back to a place where one belongs - home. He explains that things just loose their meaning when one is lost and feeling really lonely. He longs for love and connection with someone, instead of the town to town life he has been living.

I'm sittin' in the railway station
Got a ticket for my destination
On a tour of one night stands
My suitcase and guitar in hand
And every stop is neatly planned
For a poet and a one man band

It is almost as if he feels prostuted by his work. Every "stop" just being a "destination" and everything being "planned" in this very systematic entrapment. It's everyday living minus the feeling of really living.

Homeward bound
I wish I was
Homeward bound
Home, where my thought's escaping
Home, where my music's playing
Home, where my love lies waiting
Silently for me

Everyday's an endless stream
Of cigarettes and magazines
And each town looks the same to me
The movies and the factories
And every stranger's face I see
Reminds me that I long to be

Cigarettes and magazines are also in America when he feels bored and like he's outgrown where he's at. He's gone out and searched for the world and found everything is the same and that strangers make him want to get back to someplace that he knows - A place of comfort and where he is actually living.

Homeward bound
I wish I was
Homeward bound
Home, where my thought's escaping
Home, where my music's playing
Home, where my love lies waiting
Silently for me

Tonight I'll sing my songs again
I'll play the game and pretend
But all my words come back to me
In shades of mediocrity
Like emptyness in harmony
I need someone to comfort me

He has a duty to trudge on, but he feels that everything he says is just meaningless. Like when you're not really living, then everything looses it's meaning and all he wants is for someone to go home to - to have them comfort him and where he can live a real life.

Homeward bound
I wish I was
Homeward bound
Home, where my thought's escaping
Home, where my music's playing
Home, where my love lies waiting
Silently for me
Silently for me
Silently for me
